Jose Ines Garcia Zarate, the illegal immigrant who was acquitted in the murder trial of Kate Steinle last week, now faces new federal immigration and gun charges.
“A federal grand jury indicted Jose Inez Garcia-Zarate today for being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, and for being an illegally present alien in possession of a firearm and ammunition,” according to a statement released by the Department of Justice.
If he is convicted on either of the charges he faces the possibility of serving up to ten years in federal prison.
Zarate was acquitted of first and second degree murder and involuntary manslaughter on Thursday, Fox News reports.
Back in July of 2015 Steinle was walking with her father along a San Francisco pier when she was fatally shot.
