The suspect accused of fatally shooting a 19-year-old Colorado woman told homicide investigators the victim had attempted to hire him to kill her, according to court records, the Associated Press reported.
Twenty-two-year-old, Joseph McDaniel Lopez, said he was responding to an advertisement placed on Craigslist that was entitled, “I want to put a hit on myself,” KMGH-TV reported.
Court records regarding the case describe how the suspect and victim exchanged text messages with each other before Lopez picked her up at her apartment in Broomfield, Colorado.
The two reportedly drove around while discussing how she would pay him. Lopez also claims that during this time he attempted to persuade her to change her mind.
According to court records, Lopez eventually stopped the vehicle at the spot where he fatally shot her, claiming the victim had also provided the weapon.
The victim’s body was found on December 29, the day after her boyfriend had reported her missing, along with his Glock 9mm pistol.
An autopsy conducted on the victim found she was shot in the head and had a potentially lethal amount of heroin in her system.
Homicide investigators connected Lopez to the victim through the numerous text messages the two had exchanged on the night of her death.
